Research Service

Do you love writing but hate research? Would you like to make your fictional characters, dialogue and plot more authentic but don't have the time or inclination to find out the necessary background details? Are you looking for ways to increase your chances of publication but don't know where to go for help? Do you need someone to kick-start your campaign to market and promote your self-published book?

If you have answered "yes" to any or all of these questions, then let me help you. As a freelance journalist and writer with over 20 years experience of writing articles, short stories and poems which have been published in a wide variety of national newspapers, magazines and anthologies, I'm confident I can provide what you are looking for. I can deliver up-to-date, accurate and detailed research using reliable and authentic online and offline sources in a user-friendly format. I can meet tight deadlines, maintain a confidential, professional but friendly approach and go the "extra mile" if I uncover something interesting and unexpected in the course of my research that could help to take your work in a completely  new direction.

Recent research projects undertaken for clients and my own writing

  • How to submit an illustrated children's book to agents and publishers
  • Police procedure for dealing with a missing person
  • Marketing services for promoting a science fiction crossover novel
  • Background information on the author Elizabeth von Arnim
  • A brief history of Constantinople before it became Istanbul

What will you get for your money?

I will provide you with a typed report which answers point-by-point the specific questions you have asked me, together with any useful links to organisations or individuals that may be able to help you further. I may also include a separate individual copy of any article or book extract (subject to copyright restrictions) that I consider might be helpful to you. All sources used will be listed at the end of my report.

How much will you have to pay?

My standard fee is £15.00 an hour including VAT plus any major expenses that may be incurred. However, I will always try to be mindful of your budget so there is some room for manoeuvre. I will need to find out as much as possible about what your individual requirements are, what your timescale is and how much work I will have to do before providing you with a free quote. Please note: due to the nature of research, it will usually require a minimum of five hours work and for more detailed and specialist topics, more time will be required.

How can you find out more?

If you think I may be able to help you, with absolutely no obligation to take things further at this stage, please feel free to contact me using the form on the Contact Me page or by emailing [email protected]

I reserve the right to decline to take on any project if I feel that the nature of the subject matter I am being asked to research will compromise me in any way or if I do not feel comfortable with it. I am also unable to offer a fact-checking service at the present time.

I asked Melissa Lawrence for advice about submitting an illustrated children’s book to agents and publishers. Melissa responded with a very helpful, detailed and up-to-date set of guidelines and advice on what, where, when and how to submit, including some of the pitfalls to watch out for. She also provided some very useful links to publishers and agents currently looking for this kind of book. Melissa gave full answers to all the specific questions I posed and offered lots of other information on aspects I had not even thought of. She is clearly a very thorough researcher and presents the information clearly. The price was very reasonable and her service was great value – very strongly recommended!
